After the destruction of Mission Santa Cruz de San Sabá, Mission San Lorenzo de la Santa Cruz was founded in 1762 to serve the Lipan Apache Indians.

Over a period of eight years, the padres and their followers constructed 14 adobe and limestone buildings.

However, the mission was never well supplied or supported, and it was abandoned in 1769.
